The Deadly Years

TOS Season 2 Episode 12
Air Date: December 8th, 1967

The Enterprise stops at a small colony on Gamma Hydra IV to resupply but finds most of the colony dead. They died of old age but none were older then 30 years old. Of the few that were still alive, they all showed signs of old age including how they looked.

The stop at Gamma Hydra IV was a detour on their way to star base ten where they were dropping off Commedore Stocker. Stocker started being insisting that they get to star base ten right away but Kirk decides to stay in orbit.

Then all the people that were on the away mission start showing signs of aging too. All but Ensign Chekov. Lieutenant Arlene Galway was also aging faster then the others which eventually she succumbs to old age.

As the rest age, Kirk starts going senile and forgetful, giving orders multiple times. Stocker demands a competency hearing to decide if Kirk should be removed from command. They agree but none of the senior officers are willing or able to take over so Stocker takes over. His first command is to set a direct course to star base ten, which takes the Enterprise through the Romulan neutral zone.

McCoy discovers that the difference between Chekov and everyone else on the away mission is that Chekov had a scare while on the planet. He recalls that adrenaline used to be the treatment to radiation poisoning but they stopped using it when they discovered a new drug that was more effective.

Meanwhile the ship is attacked by ten Romulan warbirds. Kirk takes the adrenaline and starts reversing in age. He gets to the bridge and uses an old bluff, that the corbormite device on the ship will destroy the warbirds too if the Enterprise is destroyed. The Romulans retreat and the Enterprise escapes at warp eight.

Only one officer died in this episode. Lieutenant Arlene Galway who wore blue. She died of old age, but I am counting it in my records since it was a death caused by an unnatural source.

"What a stupid place to hang a mirror." - Galway

"Give some more blood, Chekov. The needle won't hurt, Chekov. Take off your shirt, Chekov. Roll over, Chekov. Breathe deeply, Chekov. Blood sample, Chekov. Marrow sample, Chekov. Skin sample, Chekov. If-if I live long enough, I'm going to run out of samples." - Chekov
