Gene Roddenberry
August 21st, 1921 - October 24th, 1991
In this journey of watching every Star Trek TV show and movie, I have been going in order of date aired. Gene Roddenberry died October 24th, 1991, 3 days after the 5th episode of TNG aired called Disaster. Perhaps the episode title was an omen but Star Trek fans (trekkers and trekkies alike) suffered a great loss. In the late 2007 they launched some of his ashes into orbit and in 2009 towards deep space.
Here is the digitized copy of his obituary from the New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/1991/10/26/movies/gene-roddenberry-star-trek-creator-dies-at-70.html
"Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms. If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there." - Gene Roddenberry
