In this episode we learn about a friendship Data has with the security officer Lt. Jenna D'Sora. The episode doesn't indicate why Data and Jenna are friends but they do both play in a woodwind quartet together. Jenna is getting over a bad breakup, and she deflects her emotions onto Data. Data asks his friends if he should pursue the relationship with mixed results. But he decides to do it and writes a boyfriend program.

It is interesting watching Data try to be in a relationship. The program he wrote makes him play different roles based on characters in history, and even gets into shouting match with Jenna. At the end of the episode they decide to call it off and Data deletes the program.

During the episode, the Enterprise is exploring a nebula when it finds a class M planet inside. But while navigating the nebula they end up going through distortions that cause matter to phase temporarily. One officer (red shirt) dies by falling into the floor. They end up using a shuttle leading the Enterprise to avoid these distortions until they can get out.
