The Nagus

DS9 Season 1 Episode 10
Air Date: March 21st, 1993

The Grand Nagus Zek, a sort of religious figure of the Ferengi where the religion is the worship of profits, comes to DS9 because of the profit opportunities of the wormhole. Only he claims that he is getting too old to care and names Quark as his successor. Soon after the announcement, Zek passes away. Only he didn't and it is a test for his son Krax to see how he would handle the situation. Krax teams up with Quark's brother Rom to flush him out an airlock. Zek shows up at the last moment to save Quark and scold his son.

The episode is the first to get into how Ferengi work towards their goals of profit. In TNG it is made clear that they are profit focused but they show a figure like the Grand Nagus that is a parallel to the Pope, or even the Rules of Acquisition which were mentioned in this episode.

The episode also had a touching side. Throughout the the relationship between Jake and Nog were put into question. Everyone was telling Cmdr. Sisko that Nog was a bad influence on Jake and Sisko was in the delecate position of being the bad guy if he told Jake not to hang around Nog. But when he decided to talk to Jake about it, he found Jake hiding in a cargo bay with Nog. At first Sisko was expecting they were up to mischief but discovers that Jake was teaching Nog to read. So really Jake was being a good influence on Nog.

Rules of Acquisition

Rule 1: "Once you have their money, you never give it back."

"Tell me, is the Grand Nagus here on business or pleasure?" - Quark
"Is there a difference?" - Krax

"If he were my son, I'd find a friend for him other than Nog." - Chief O'Brien
"I'm afraid that's easier said than done. The two of them have become inseparable." - Cmdr. Sisko
"I'd find a way to separate them, sir. That Nog's a bad influence." - Chief O'Brien
"I appreciate the advice, Chief, but I trust my son. Besides, if I get between them now, it would become me versus Nog, and I'm not going to force Jake to choose between us." - Cmdr. Sisko
"Why not?" - Chief O'Brien
"Because I'd probably lose." - Cmdr. Sisko
"Oh, I doubt that, sir." - Chief O'Brien
"That's because your daughter's three. Wait until she's fourteen!" - Cmdr. Sisko

It was a stroke of brilliance to open a bar so close to a stable wormhole.

Krax: Why, he didn't even know the wormhole existed!" -
"That's what makes it so impressive." - Zek

"The Gamma Quadrant, gentlemen. Millions of new worlds at our very doorstep. The potential for Ferengi business expansion is staggering." - Zek
"And best of all, no one there has ever heard the name 'Ferengi'!" - Krax
"Our reputation will be absolutely stainless." - Gral
"Our word can be our bond." - Nava
"Until we decide to break it!" - Krax

"Never trust anyone who places your prosperity above their own." - Zek
